I'll never forget a girl I had a crush on in high school saying about Ron Paul "he's a libertarian, he's basically an anarchist." Vibe killer.
Which is another thing as Jer sort of pointed out in the terrible music thread about Frank Turner, is that some really young punks (8th grade ish?) get into libertarianism via punk while still trying to figure out what all these political words mean (at least anecdotally for me was the case with kids I knew, like that girl). Most grow out of it once they just learn some shit about how the world works (which she did).

lipservice to tolerance of LGBTQA people.
in practice, US libertarianism has been pretty awful to that community.

March 19, 2017, 05:56:10 PMQuote from: BlakeK on March 19, 2017, 11:01:46 AMI mean I think that comes mostly from a misreading of most punk ideology. On the surface, libertarianism seems like a pretty safe way to grapple with "punk politics" without getting into the really radical side of it:
With punk being anti-establishment in nature it makes me wonder if the swing right that you and I referred to will swing back left the longer a Republican is in the White House. I may be wrong about everything in this thread, I'm just thinking out loud.
"no government" check!
"tolerance of LGBTQA people" check!
it's kind of like a way to feel like a rebel without having to change anything about society. It's just for dummies.

It's disturbing and strange. I always thought it was a shock value kind of deal but with the skinhead trend it seemed to me like there was and is a portion of punk fans who share values with nazis. I may be talking out of my ass but it seemed that even those who claimed to be "the good skinheads" often held private views that were sympathetic to nazi skinheads. That's just anecdotal though.
Awful. It's hard to believe we're going down this same road again.
And when are people going to give up on The Exploited? They've had the soft on nazis/ sympathizer accusations for decades.
I could totally see skinheads heading further right in the Trump/alt right era.
I know lots of good skinheads, but there is sometimes a streak toward libertarianism/ right wingerness in the street punk scenes in certain areas (looking at you Connecticut).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4306i99LMXo
This is the first song that made me aware of bro folk (As far as I'm aware, I'd maybe consider this proto-bro-folk as they don't really follow the trope (mumford & sons/ lumineers) but seemed to have kicked the door open to folk-pop music again in the mainstream in the early 2010's) but as far as mainstream folk music goes, this one ^ is certainly listenable.

Just finished Cursed in Cairo (no one else has read it yet?!) Have a big list of stuff to read. Not sure what next. Maybe the board will help me decide? I was gonna read Camus' The Fall but maybe I'll hold off to make some content on the board. Someone pick what I read next!
Steinbeck In Dubious Battle
Greene The Lawless Roads
Salinger Franny and Zooey or Raise High The Roofbeam, Carpenters
Bradbury The Martian Chronicles or The Sound of Thunder
Morrison Beloved
Dostoyevsky The Idiot
as for comics, lately I've been reading Motor Crush, Mighty Thor, Mosaic, Spell on Wheels, Flash, Wonder Woman, Ms. Marvel, Sex Criminals, and Black Panther.
What about you Eugene?

thread about how to get into stuff, how to begin doing stuff
what do you know?
if you wanna get into mario bava movies, the best way to start is either with his first 'official' director credit, Black Sunday, or if you want a more modern movie (that is in color and isn't basically a hammer horror ghost movie) you can watch Blood and Black Lace
these are also great ways to start getting into italian horror movies in general, he is kind of like the fountain that other people drank from
i will update further when i remember what else i know
Mario bava for the win.
My pro tip.
If you want to get into a side hustle to make some extra cash find your local library sale.
Download a scanning app on your phone that allows you to see what books/dvds etc sell for on amazon/ebay. Then go grab a bunch for $1-$2 and resell them on amazon/ebay.
That or just find your local library sale and go buy yourself a bunch of books/dvds on the cheap for your own entertainment.
FOR YOUR HEALTH
Haven't seen any of Bava's stuff. Gonna check out Black Sunday.
