sjw, cuck, beta male, snowflake, white people saying "woke", alt-right.

I'll never forget a girl I had a crush on in high school saying about Ron Paul "he's a libertarian, he's basically an anarchist." Vibe killer.

Which is another thing as Jer sort of pointed out in the terrible music thread about Frank Turner, is that some really young punks (8th grade ish?) get into libertarianism via punk while still trying to figure out what all these political words mean (at least anecdotally for me was the case with kids I knew, like that girl). Most grow out of it once they just learn some shit about how the world works (which she did).

"tolerance of LGBTQA people" check!

lipservice to tolerance of LGBTQA people.

in practice, US libertarianism has been pretty awful to that community.
100%! They suck. I tried to say that by putting those two ideas in quotes, that they aren't actually true but are supposedly part of their ideology, or as you put it much better, "lipservice".

the new dinosaur jr record "give a glimpse of what yer not"
its so good
Haven't heard it yet! Gotta do that this week!

With punk being anti-establishment in nature it makes me wonder if the swing right that you and I referred to will swing back left the longer a Republican is in the White House. I may be wrong about everything in this thread, I'm just thinking out loud.
I mean I think that comes mostly from a misreading of most punk ideology. On the surface, libertarianism seems like a pretty safe way to grapple with "punk politics" without getting into the really radical side of it:

"no government" check!
"tolerance of LGBTQA people" check!

it's kind of like a way to feel like a rebel without having to change anything about society. It's just for dummies.

Awful. It's hard to believe we're going down this same road again.

And when are people going to give up on The Exploited? They've had the soft on nazis/ sympathizer accusations for decades.
I feel like there will always be an element within punk that is at the very least passive when it comes to nazi imagery and sentiments. It's disturbing and strange. I always thought it was a shock value kind of deal but with the skinhead trend it seemed to me like there was and is a portion of punk fans who share values with nazis. I may be talking out of my ass but it seemed that even those who claimed to be "the good skinheads" often held private views that were sympathetic to nazi skinheads. That's just anecdotal though.

I could totally see skinheads heading further right in the Trump/alt right era.

I know lots of good skinheads, but there is sometimes a streak toward libertarianism/ right wingerness in the street punk scenes in certain areas (looking at you Connecticut).

Jenn F rips on those Propagandhi covers

Yeah, that's not what I've heard haha. Maybe I just like the straight up bro folk

This is the first song that made me aware of bro folk (As far as I'm aware, I'd maybe consider this proto-bro-folk as they don't really follow the trope (mumford & sons/ lumineers) but seemed to have kicked the door open to folk-pop music again in the mainstream in the early 2010's) but as far as mainstream folk music goes, this one ^ is certainly listenable.

11

but as far as bands everyone agrees is terrible, is it worth mentioning the obvious? i.e. hoobastank/koRn/limp bizkit/phish/all nu metal and jam bands

i find pink floyd brutal.. and yeah, pearl jam is horrendous
.

there's this weird wave of pop music on the radio lately riding in on the coat tails of bro folk. they're all british for some reason. it's bro folk songwriting but with synthesizers instead of banjos. i've never had a job where i couldn't pick the music before haha

If this is the music I'm thinking of I like it haha

something like this

Here are my nominations:
Sublime
U2
Frank Turner and his dumb half assed Billy Bragg impression.
Ugh! Yes! To all!

Frank Turner and his dumb half assed Billy Bragg impression.

"Hey, what if Billy Bragg was really shitty and also had the horseshit right-libertarian views of a 13 year old? I think it'd go a little something like this..."

Yes. This. Exactly this. This is exactly how I feel about Frank Turner.
"Rock N' Roll will change the world!"

Unpopular opinion, but FRNTRNNR was pretty bad

Enjoy your 2 week ban, shitbag
Oh snap!

I'm sure that at this point, everyone has heard Pat the Bunny's rap album, right?  That shit was hilariously bad.
100 Trash Bags of Weed, Breakfast All Day, and Gamers are all my jam. 100% unironically. "I'm getting higher than a vampire on fire!"
Where can I hear this?  I'm not convinced such a thing really exists but y'all have me curious now.

What Ive Stolen, What Ive Earned - Sherman Alexie
Prison Writings: My Life is a Sun Dance - Leonard Pelteir
Indian Killer - Sherman Alexie

and Im at least half way/nearly done with

Refusing to be a Man: Essays on Sex and Justice - John Stoltenberg
The Satanic Verses - Salman Rushdie
and self help book on communicating but its kinda weird, only book I wouldnt recommend here
refusing to be a man is weird at times too, pretty great in others

Sherman Alexie is the best. My girlfriend got to meet him!

Having said that, I'd rather listen to Papa Roach than GG Allin
This is signature worthy

i'm dumb as shit and i can't make myself read as often as i think i should sometimes but i've been working my way through a bunch of books on film for the past year or so. the main one is tim lucas' epic biography of mario bava. in between trying to force books into my face i read a lot of comics, i really enjoyed the image comics run of "Prophet" and i highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of science fiction or fantasy (it's kind of like Heavy Metal)
Gonna check Prophet out!

Just finished Cursed in Cairo (no one else has read it yet?!) Have a big list of stuff to read. Not sure what next. Maybe the board will help me decide? I was gonna read Camus' The Fall but maybe I'll hold off to make some content on the board. Someone pick what I read next!

Steinbeck In Dubious Battle
Greene The Lawless Roads
Salinger Franny and Zooey or Raise High The Roofbeam, Carpenters
Bradbury The Martian Chronicles or The Sound of Thunder
Morrison Beloved
Dostoyevsky The Idiot

as for comics, lately I've been reading Motor Crush, Mighty Thor, Mosaic, Spell on Wheels, Flash, Wonder Woman, Ms. Marvel, Sex Criminals, and Black Panther.

What about you Eugene?

Yeah I was trying to avoid the super obvious nu metal, bieber, those pop bands disney and nickelodeon put together. the humor has been drained out of making fun of those for the last 20 years.

GG Allin is dumb shock rock for dumb idiots.
qft

maybe it's just that I'm kinda young compared to come folks on here but, pearl jam. the most bland, uninteresting electric guitar elevator music if there ever was one. nickelback before nickelback. rock n' roll Kenny G.

thread about how to get into stuff, how to begin doing stuff

what do you know?

if you wanna get into mario bava movies, the best way to start is either with his first 'official' director credit, Black Sunday, or if you want a more modern movie (that is in color and isn't basically a hammer horror ghost movie) you can watch Blood and Black Lace
these are also great ways to start getting into italian horror movies in general, he is kind of like the fountain that other people drank from

i will update further when i remember what else i know

Mario bava for the win.

My pro tip.

If you want to get into a side hustle to make some extra cash find your local library sale.

Download a scanning app on your phone that allows you to see what books/dvds etc sell for on amazon/ebay. Then go grab a bunch for $1-$2 and resell them on amazon/ebay.

That or just find your local library sale and go buy yourself a bunch of books/dvds on the cheap for your own entertainment.

FOR YOUR HEALTH
I own so many books from library sales. I don't have any room for anything in my room. I do need a side hustle though....
Haven't seen any of Bava's stuff. Gonna check out Black Sunday.
