what's the darkroom like? i only know a little bit about that kind of stuff but i would love to read whatever you care to write about it

Is .club a real extension? I love that. I agree we don't really need the subcategories. I'm gonna sleep on where those links should go. So far, I can only think one should go to Brett's XPeeps profile and another should go to whatever criminalflowers.com is now.
i also am in awe that that is a real website, the world is an amazing place

i feel like i haven't had a conversation with another person in years, i feel like i never want to take the time to explain my actual point of view so i just say something expected

General / Re: What's everyone listening to?

i listen to podcasts and stuff a lot, mostly the best show with tom scharpling

music wise ever since what.cd went down i am bad at listening to new music, i wish it was easier.

i'm trying to listen to all the big ol' bands just so i can have some context for things today. lately, neil young, emerson lake and palmer, just random stuff. i like japanese pop music

i'm dumb as shit and i can't make myself read as often as i think i should sometimes but i've been working my way through a bunch of books on film for the past year or so. the main one is tim lucas' epic biography of mario bava. in between trying to force books into my face i read a lot of comics, i really enjoyed the image comics run of "Prophet" and i highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of science fiction or fantasy (it's kind of like Heavy Metal)

i think there's probably at least one album we can all agree is cool. you just have to get to the root, where do the cool jams spring from. a halloween sound effects record?

General / where to get in on <blank> thread
« on: February 14, 2017, 03:27:24 PM »
thread about how to get into stuff, how to begin doing stuff

what do you know?

if you wanna get into mario bava movies, the best way to start is either with his first 'official' director credit, Black Sunday, or if you want a more modern movie (that is in color and isn't basically a hammer horror ghost movie) you can watch Blood and Black Lace
these are also great ways to start getting into italian horror movies in general, he is kind of like the fountain that other people drank from

i will update further when i remember what else i know

i think the general idea is that it's better to increase the social safety net in the existing structure that we have, than to allow the libertarian party to completely destroy the country in every conceivable way and leave us at the mercy of 'market forces', even if the second one has less government in it

sorry that's kinda hyperbolic

Lol that's who I meant! She hasn't posted in so long so I forgot. Yeah her and her partner seem to be doing well, they're living in Ohio now. They made zucchini bread that I heard good things about.
That's awesome!!
I miss so many boardies. I guess facebook probably fills that gap for most, but I don't have one of those.... everyone come back to the board!

what's the straight dope on WTF, is that the good stuff? do i just pull up episode 1 or should i listen to the most recent episode

i guess now that i'm thinking about it i listen to other stuff too, i really like 'hollywood handbook' but it's like so stupid it's hard to recommend

that is one thing about podcasts, there are some that you have to 'get into' more than others

General / podcast thread
« on: June 15, 2016, 09:08:08 PM »
sorry if i'm posting a thread that already exists, but, podcast thread!

i listen to 'the best show' with tom scharpling a lot, i've grown to love listening to him complain for 3 hours every week

i also like 'you must remember this' which is just about hollywood history bullshit but it's really cool, it's fun to listen to

post the f*cking podcasts you listen to and ask for some recommendations

the superman shorts have a kind of interesting story behind their creation, fleischer studios was busy working on an animated movie and didn't want to commit to anything else, when paramount pictures hit them up and was like "we should make some cartoons about this superman guy everyone is buying comics of".

the fleischer bros didn't want to outright reject them for whatever reason, so they just asked for 4x the per-episode budget that was typically used at that time (something like 1.6 million per episode adjusted for inflation) hoping that paramount would be like "fuck that" immediately. instead, paramount wound up agreeing to 50% of that and the fleischer bros were like "alright, well, shit"

the only thing i should say i guess is that the studio kind of blew up on itself and paramount kind of fucked them over, so probably don't watch past episode 9. they start being WW2 propaganda movies for the last 8 instead of cool things where superman beats up king kong

if you like b:tas you should check out the fleischer studios superman serials from the 40s, they were a big influence on bruce timm's artstyle and stuff i think. there's some ambitious animation in certain episodes of b:tas that is cool to look at now, like the one with clayface. it's also neat that it wasn't overly silly or anything, that they respected kids enough at that time to make a show that was serious
