Mullen is definitely the best. The amount of moves he invented is crazy. Back when I was really into skating, my favorite was always William Spencer. He's not the best technically, but he's so fun to watch.

This should just be the "general skateboarding appreciation thread" because skateboarding has no winners or losers, bests or worsts!

Nothing because he's using the perfect balance code and that's cheating!

probably in the hundred thousand range?

saw thread title and immediately thought mullen.

at this point most of my favorite skaters are also visual artists, ed templeton, chad mouska, mark gonzalez, etc. because i'm more into the culture than the moves.

Even as far as moves go, Ed and Gonz are amazing. Ed is especially one of my favorite skateboarders.  would say mullen might be the best at that, but I couldnt say that there is a best skater.

Check out Arto Saari's photographs. And his video part in Really Sorry. Everyone that you mentioned is fucking awesome, it's cool to look at it that way.

I notice that no one mentioned Tony Hawk. I don't know a lot about the great skateboarders other than I saw their names on THPS and occasionally talked about by skater friends growing up. Why is Tony Hawk the most famous skateboarder? I get that it is probably due to the video game and tv appearances but why is he the one who got his own video game and all of the fame?

Tony is without question one of the best. He invented over 70 tricks, won nearly every contest on the 1980's and 90's, and continues to win the ones he enters now (after over a decade of retirement from contests). I think people tend to not talk about him simply because he's obvious. Like he goes without saying.
Although, his presence as a household name has also put him in a position where he is a touchy subject. People eye-roll over his sponsorships with McDonald's, Hot Wheels, etc, which is reasonable, but his contributions are endless. He's in a weird in-between position where people unfamiliar with skateboarding think he's the best because they don't know of any other pros or people who think he's the best because they are really familiar with his amazingly innovative and successful career. Maybe a reasonable metaphor would be people who think Green Day is the best punk band ever because they were there from the beginning and their early music really meant a lot to them, and there's people who think Green Day is the best punk band ever because they are better than Simple Plan, and Blink 182. There's just a funny Twilight Zone around those figures with underground and mainstream success but their successes tend to be measured differently, despite the end result being the same.

Tony still has amazing video parts and ads in magazines at 47. He was my first favorite skater, and remains one of my favorites. I've seen him skate in person a number of times, and he's unreal to watch. Not a single bailed trick. His consistency and mastery is so impressive.

His part in The End is one of the best ever. [TW real live bullfighting scene that is totally unnecessary]

Green Day probably is the greatest punk band ever (I know few will agree but I'll argue it with whoever wants to do so) and I think that's a good metaphor if I understand what you're saying. Both are great and arguably the best at what they do but both have made very questionable decisions and suffer from over exposure which turns people off.

Exactly! I'm not a green day fan myself, but I know that is what they represent to a lot of people. And they are the perfect example for that situation.

as far as character goes, this man was utterly despicable... mark (gator) ragowski.. i saw a really good documentary about his life years ago that would appeal to people who aren't all about skating as well..

"Mark Anthony "Gator" Rogowski (born August 10, 1966)[2] was a prominent professional skateboarder in the 1980s and very early 1990s. His career ended when he was convicted of assaulting, raping and murdering Jessica Bergsten on March 6, 1992. His life was chronicled in a critically acclaimed 2003 documentary titled Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator by American filmmaker Helen Stickler.

here's him in his prime.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cv1p-CgYOCE

Whenever I look at shoes, I always see Stefan Janoski Nike skateboarding shoes. I have never heard of the guy and was just wondering if he is actually regarded highly in skateboarding circles or if he's just a lucky guy who somehow managed to get his own shoe.

Stefan is really good. He's skates switch better than practically anyone, and one of the best tre flips of all time:

He basically got lucky that the (in my opinion boring) shoe designed partially by him, partially by the professional Nike designers took off as a huge trend. Usually you get royalties on every pro shoe sold, but rumor has it Nike stopped paying him royalties on every individual pair and he just gets a big check instead. I hate the damn things. The design is so bland and uninspired.

holy shit that dudes style is fucking wicked.

I usually use this thread to rep my younger brother.. here's some shit of him killing it.. grinding rails like butter. we both got into skating at the same time, i was about 11 and he was 7. my dad was real supportive of us doing it. I remember one of the first times he took me to the skatepark he made a deal that i'd get 20 bucks if i could A) olley up on to the box or B) drop in.. so he was giving me some slack to see if i wanted to skate street or vert... anyway, me and my bro used to skate together all the time. I'm pissed I gave it up. I was up to the point of doing some handplants and actually catching air on the vert with some decent hang time. But my bro stuck with it.
